Fall is finally here and the garden is livelier than ever! We have made a full recovery from the terrible heat this summer. There are a variety of plants growing from flowers, vegetables, trees, vines, and herbs. We also finished our tool shed mural!

The Citizen Gardener series consisted of three classes that provided hands-on gardening instruction. Participants learned how to build raised bed plots, compost bins, create a mulch bed plot and install a rainwater collection system.

We're excited to host a Citizen Gardener course at the UT Concho Community Garden this month! The course is organized by local nonprofit Sustainable Food Center, and is a fantastic introduction to growing food in Central Texas. The course includes two Saturday mornings with a Wednesday class in between. All the info as well as registration can be found HERE!

We installed a metal roof on our tool shed today! Much thanks to everyone who came and helped! We are now ready to proceed this Fall with constructing a rainwater harvesting system that will capture rainwater from the roof's surface area. Hopefully we can significantly reduce our water consumption from the utility through this system (assuming that it rains at some point...) This project will be led by the UT student group Engineers for a Sustainable World.

We've been getting good harvests lately! Tomatoes of all colors (red, orange, yellow, green, pink), summer squash, tomatillos, swiss chard, peppers, cucumbers, beans.....

We'll be donating squash and peppers to the Open Door Lunch for the homeless this week.

We've also just planted many new things. Look for watermelon, pumpkin, lima beans, zinnias, sunflowers, peanuts, and okra coming up soon!

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who's contributed to this project! The garden is really coming together. First plantings are really starting to establish, and little seedlings are coming up left and right. We will be getting a tool shed and rainwater harvesting system built within the coming weeks, thanks to financial contributions from the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellowship and the Texas Parents Student Enrichment Awards. Getting the tool shed on site will really be a significant step in the garden's establishment, as tools and supplies will finally be able to be conveniently located on-site for participants to use.

This nasturtium plant in one of the demonstration beds is really pretty!

These onions seem to grow an inch every day.

Our peach tree is blossoming and is growing its leaves back!

It's so exciting to see seeds sprouting, like this calypso bean plant.

We got some new perennials planted in our community-maintained garden, like this salvia.

The kids over at the UT Child Development Center made us this awesome sign! The kids have a garden plot of their own where they've planted some seeds, and have been helping with watering the garden every week!

So, UT actually has food growing on its campus. UT DHFS (Division of Housing and Food Service) planted a small vegetable gardenin the Kinsolving courtyard recently, and we're going to check it out! The food growing in this garden is organic, very local, and will be served in the dining halls!

Community garden update:

The soil test came through, the results are kind of needlessly complicated. The surface (top 2 feet) is good, but underneath, they found contamination in the groundwater. That has no impact on our ability to plant crops, but because of this finding, UT is obligated to perform further tests, and maybe take action to improve the groundwater. SO... we may or may not have to move sites. There is the possibility that the construction of the community garden may shift to the spring semester. This isn't an official decision quite yet, but we'll let you know what the plan is as soon as it's verified. Those of you who reserved/paid for plots will be able to keep your spots for the spring, and get your money returned in the meantime. Sorry for the wait, but establishing this garden is not so far down the road!

Hello!

Community Garden Update

-Soil test is pending...hopefully results will be in soon, and they'll be good! Then we can get to work building the garden!

-Trees on the community garden site: All trees have been removed except one. Evidently they were all slated for removal since UT acquired the property. Since the crew was already on site for the removal of 2 trees (one dead, one invasive), they finished the job. The trees were classified as unstable after the drought. While it's sad that we've lost these trees (and the lovely shade they provided), making the best of the situation, we now have more room to plant fruit trees! Any particular requests? Leave a comment!

Thanks to everyone who came out today! We successfully cleaned up our garden site of lots of interesting debris. {Any artists out there? You're welcome to make an art piece out of what we've found!} Once we get the results of the soil test for the site, we'll proceed to workday #2, where we'll be building raised beds, laying out pathways, building compost bins, and distributing soil. Details:
The plans for this project are designed by a UT landscape architecture student. We're taking an unplanted, high foot-traffic area on the south side of Andrews residence hall and turning it into a fragrant, colorful, seasonal garden with native and adapted plants (roses, rosemary, lavender, Beauty Berry, rue, oregeno, and others), limestone paved pathways, and benches to sit on. Any UT student is welcome to come help out and all supplies will be provided, as well as free breakfast.

Here are some succulents we planted at our meeting yesterday... We also planted lots of herbs- rosemary, 2 types of lavender, wormwood, purple sage, and some "mini" mint (Corsican). Make sure to check it out when you're near the HRC!

The garden looks awesome! It was great to see everyone come out today. One more meeting's worth of work and this garden will be done! We're thinking about adding a pathway of crushed colored glass, and some more color and shrubs- feel free to comment and add your suggestions.
We'll keep you posted on vegetable gardening opportunities for the near future....

Hi everyone,

Money didn't come through on time this week- next week, definitely, we'll be planting. This week we'll be heading over to the farmer's market at the Triangle.

native plant garden

Hey!

For those of you who roughed the cold and came out today, first of all : awesome, but second, I must prove to you the success of our native plant garden behind CS5 despite its current, weathered state.

These pictures were taken August 2009, after a HOT summer:

Given that these are all native plants, they may now look dry and generally dead, but most of them will come back come spring.

student-run community vegetable garden in the works!

That's right....just got out of a meeting with UT faculty and staff confirming that this project is underway! A year ago it didn't even seem possible, given seemingly endless restrictions and bureaucracy. But it's hard these days to deny the countless positive impacts of community gardening. Community building, hands-on experience, quality, organic produce, food transparency and connection, true sustainability, just being outdoors!....the list goes on and on and on.....This garden will be located on campus, ideal for students who want to get involved, and the garden will likely be split between personal plots, plots to serve UT dining halls, and plots growing produce dedicated to being donated. We're planning to start our first season Fall 2010, although plenty of preparation is needed before then. I'll make sure to keep yall posted on the progress of this project! And always, feel free to comment!
